QUEEN OF HEARTS

9 hours [3 SAGA Points] N E W
Prerequisite skills: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches.

Look what can happen when you limit yourself to only one color (red) thread, fabric, etc. With so much to learn your own heart will be pumping through this fast-paced class as you explore differences in thread, fabric and stitch textures. Begin with a quick exercise in curved piecing to create the heart base. Next, two quick and simple smocking designs point out the differences in fabric grain and how it affects manipulation. You then will embellish your heart with the basic embroidery stitches required for the SAGA Artisan apprentice embroidery sampler, including chain, backstitch, lazy daisy, french knot, blanket, fly and feather, but stitched with exotic and fun threads! Learn three different forms of appliqué, including one to decoratively join smocking to flat fabric. Finally, crown your heart with bead embroidery, once again using basic embroidery stitches. The resulting 7" heart is suitable and ready to mount and frame or to attach to something else of choice, such as the flap of a handbag (kit available separately). No pre-class preparation.

Kit contents and cost: All fabrics, threads, ribbons and beads to make the heart are provided and will include two pieces pleated silk dupioni, assorted velveteen, wool felt, silks and novelty fabrics; Kreinik metallic braid and Bella silk, beading thread, pearl cotton, overdyed Au Ver à Soie and Vineyard silks; grosgrain, organza and silk ribbon; assorted seed, bugle and accent beads; needles, base stabilizer and detailed, illustrated handout for the heart. $33.00
Pattern and all materials for the handbag, including onyx black silk dupioni and interfacings, are available as a kit for purchase from the instructor with prior notification 6 weeks prior to class. $30.00

Note: This class is scheduled to be taught for the Garden State Chapter, SAGA, in Northern New Jersey, April 21-22, 2012

Kit is complete—pouch is partially constructed with set-in zipper—and requires no pre-class preparation. Finishing at home by machine is minimal.
