SILK SMOCKING FAN-DANGO
6 hours [2 SAGA Artisan Points] N E W Prerequisite skills: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches.
Everyone becomes a “fan” once they’ve smocked with silk thread on silk fabric! This decorative 8-1/2” fan project provides an opportunity to expand knowledge of basic smocking stitches to include barbed trellis, surface honeycomb and disconnected trellis. Learn an easy technique to incorporate flowerettes into a row of smocking without tying off. The fan is finished with delicate needle lace edging that is repeated on a ruffled button accent. The class will also include a discussion of color and stitch placement and their relationship to the overall design. Kit color choice will be ivory/pastel or jeweltone. No pre-class preparation.

SMOCKED CONF-EGG-TION

This silk ribbon smocked egg is a confectioner’s dream, but without the calories! Its highly textured details are the result of ruched poufs of silk ribbon. Students will learn how to control silk ribbon for smocking—a skill that carries over to stranded smocking threads as well. Smooth finishing and smocking in-the-round will also be presented and demonstrated. The class kit comes complete with pleated ivory silk dupioni and there is no pre-class preparation.

APPLIQUE SMOCKING--A CLASSIC CHOICE

If there is a wedding or other special occasion on your horizon, this class allows you to choose your project – a ring bearer’s pillow or an elegant classic wrist bag made with ivory silk dupioni. It features a beaded version of Barbara’s applique smocking technique to attach silk satin ribbon to pleated fabric. Delicate smocked feather stitch diamonds flank the ribbon which also features a row of embroidered feather stitch. All stitching is done with fine silk thread in either off white or palest pastels. The project is further embellished with a detachable half-shell ruched rosette. No pre-class preparation.

HONEYCOMB SCISSORS HAVEN

Keep your scissors safe in your sewing basket and learn all about the surface honeycomb stitch as you stitch this little project. You’ve probably done this very elastic but little used stitch by accident when you forgot to pick up a new pleat! You’ll love stitching with floss overdyed and watching the color patterns develop. The thread tassel is formed while smocking using a technique similar to embroidered turkey work. The felt-lined scissors haven is finished off with a twisted cord edge and loop to attach your scissors. No pre-class preparation and all supplies are included in kit.

AN OLD-FASHIONED CHRISTMAS STOCKING
6 hours [2 SAGA Artisan Point] Prerequisite skills: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches.
What better way to learn and to showcase a variety of stitching skills than an old fashioned Christmas stocking! This generous 15" stocking features a toe smocked with interlocking diagonals using metallic thread and a textured reverse smocked cuff, duplicated from the instructor’s stocking in the White House permanent collection. Other decorative features are fagotted satin ribbons plus ribbons couched and appliquéd with versions of fly and feather stitches. The stocking is further embellished with a metal-lic tassel and a ribbon button. In addition to instruction in these techniques, students will learn some quick assembly tricks. Students provide pleated fabric and may choose between forest green or ivory moiré bengaline base stocking fabric.

This smocked insert puts a different spin on some basic smocking stitches. Instead of going back to add flowerettes, learn how to stitch them as part of wave and trellis stitches. Or how about giving the alternating cable stitch some added character by substituting surface honeycomb stitches? Also learn some tricks for spacing stitches and keeping smocking threads smooth and even. Instruction will be given for the project which makes up into a fabric-covered journal—the perfect place to record your stitching dreams along with your sewing progress! Pre-class preparation is required.

CABLED KEEPER FOR GLASSES/SCISSORS
3 hours [1 SAGA Artisan Point] Prerequisite Skills: Students must be proficient with basic smocking stitches.
This project is a keeper—literally! If you are forever misplacing your reading glasses or can’t keep track of your scissors, this is a solution. This class introduces a new cable stitch technique to appliqué ribbon to pleated fabric. It also features the little-used extended cable stitch. All of these cable stitches will give ample opportunity to learn how to stitch them to perfection. Stitching is done with floss overdyed, which is always fun, and the project uses the instructor’s smocking-in-the-round technique to eliminate the need for a finishing seam. Approximately one hour pre-class preparation (pleating, basting and backsmocking) required.

SPIRALING LOTUS
3 hours [1 SAGA Artisan point] Prerequisite skills: Students should be proficient with basic smocking stitches.
Rows of diagonal smocking spiral out from a central ruched wire-edged ribbon flower in an award winning design that only looks complicated. Learn how to stitch in-the-round and eliminate finishing seams, to recognize repeats and start stitching from any point, and how to control and manipulate tension within a specific row. The design is stitched with overdyed cotton and metallic threads which also form the optional decorative twisted cord used for trimming. Finished project may be used as a basket lid or pillow insert. (Finishing accessories must be ordered from instructor at least four weeks prior to class.) Students provide specified pleated fabric.

BAG LADY CHIC
6 hours [2 SAGA Artisan points] Prerequisite skills: Students should be proficient with basic smocking stitches.
Inspired by a $900 designer boutique handbag, this project will appeal to experienced stitchers who enjoy using smocking in unconventional ways and who appreciate the possibilities of threads (pearl cotton and metallic braid) and stitches (closed herringbone, meandering chain, raised chain) not often utilized for smocking. Students will provide and pre-pleat bag fabric. This saucy bag features trendy bamboo handles (provided) and a decorative tassel with bead-woven lattice netting trim which will be beaded and completed in class.
