Prerequisite Skills: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches and principles

No little girls to smock for is not an excuse to quit! Learn how to fashionably incorporate smocking into your own garments. Using examples from her own wardrobe and visuals drawn from fellow stitching sisters and commercial sources, the instructor will point out and discuss how to achieve a classic and sophisticated look. You will learn simple steps to incorporate a smocked insert into an existing non-smocking pattern and how to manipulate smocking’s inherent controlled fullness to your advantage. The class will also include worked examples of special construction techniques and suitable smocking stitches, including an original design. Students supply pleated fabric samples for exercises.

Kit contents and cost: Basting tape, additional prepared fabric samples, assorted fun threads (e.g., pearl cotton, overdyed, metallic), smocking rows guide, notebook inserts, detailed illustrated handout. $18.00

The Five Diamonds is no longer a mystery! This is an opportunity, however, if you missed the Smock-Along or would prefer to stitch under direct supervision. The design features stitches (surface honeycomb, van dyke and honeycomb) which break the rules learned in beginning smocking. Class will focus on these stitches with tips and tricks to help you along. Learn also how to adapt the design size to fit your desired finished project: fold-over bag, as shown, tote bag, sewing machine or pleater cover/case, etc. Various stitching options and finishing techniques will also be covered. Students are welcome to bring previously begun project from the Smock-Along to work on.

Kit Contents: Illustrated handout with stitch graphs and #5 darner needles. $10.00
Optional: Selection of overdyed cotton floss will be available for purchase ($4.00).


3 hours [1 SAGA Artisan Point]
Prerequisite skills: Students should be proficient with basic smocking stitches and principles.

Let’s go outside the box and smock it! Learn how to manipulate fabric to fit a square box top using shadow feather stitch and beaded honeycomb stitch. A self-fabric flower with shaped petals provides an accent. Students may choose to completely cover a provided box or any 6-7ʺ square box or lid. Finishing and mounting techniques will be discussed. Students furnish own pleated fabric or request supplemental kit.

Kit contents and cost: Detailed, illustrated instructions, needles and needle threader, buckram flower base, 6ʺ box to cover. $11.00

Supplemental kit: ¾ yd dupioni, pleated as required, coordinating seed beads, matching floss and thread. Must be ordered six weeks before class. $25.00

Prerequisite skills: Advanced; inherent knowledge of van dyke stitch and smocking principles required.

You’ll be ready for a night on the town carrying this delicate bag designed to hold your keys, cell phone and lipstick. The project features a beaded van dyke smocking design and is embellished with bead-embroidered flowers and finished off with beaded tassels. Experienced stitchers will enjoy stepping outside their comfort zone and learning to adapt smocking stitches for beading while working with specialty fabric and thread. Kit is all-inclusive and there is no pre-class preparation.

Kit contents and cost: Pleated and matching interfaced silk dupioni (choice of color); ecru or black Kreinik silk Bella, cylinder beads and beading thread; needles and threader, beige or black cord, bag finishing materials, detailed illustrated handout. $38.00.

Everyone loves smocked ornaments! They are quick to stitch and easy to complete. Learn how to create and graph your own design using inherent stitch properties and how to calculate number of pleating rows and pleats based on finished size. Start stitching your own ornament using a smocking-in-the-round technique to eliminate a finishing seam. Assorted finishing and hanging methods will be presented and discussed. No pre-class preparation.

Kit contents and cost: Pleated ivory silk dupioni, two spools (red and gold) Kreinik #12 tapestry braid, 2-1/2” Styrofoam® ball, filigree end caps, smocking graphing paper, needles, detailed illustrated handout. $20.00

Prerequisite skills: Knowledge of basic smocking stitches.

Look what can happen when you limit yourself to only one color (red) thread, fabric, etc. With so much to learn your own heart will be pumping through this fast-paced class as you explore differences in thread, fabric and stitch textures. Begin with a quick exercise in curved piecing to create the heart base. Next, two quick and simple smocking designs point out the differences in fabric grain and how it affects manipulation. You then will embellish your heart with the basic embroidery stitches required for the SAGA Artisan apprentice embroidery sampler, including chain, backstitch, lazy daisy, french knot, blanket, fly and feather, but stitched with exotic and fun threads! Learn three different forms of appliqué, including one to decoratively join smocking to flat fabric. Finally, crown your heart with bead embroidery, once again using basic embroidery stitches. The resulting 7" heart is suitable and ready to mount and frame or to attach to something else of choice, such as the flap of a handbag (kit available separately). No pre-class preparation.

Kit contents and cost: All fabrics, threads, ribbons and beads to make the heart are provided and will include two pieces pleated silk dupioni, assorted velveteen, wool felt, silks and novelty fabrics; Kreinik metallic braid and Bella silk, beading thread, pearl cotton, overdyed Au Ver à Soie and Vineyard silks; grosgrain, organza and silk ribbon; assorted seed, bugle and accent beads; needles, base stabilizer and detailed, illustrated handout for the heart. $35.00
